Issues with fluid….

Is the collective issues over fluid to be the biggest issues faced by the team? The dry January approach is proving challenging, Tony has already reserved a Bye for a long weekend binge under the guise of “golf” and Andy is tempted by girly cocktails his mates have bought him then David is guzzling shots of iced Rose on top of protein drinks!

The whole concoction sounds ghastly!

Thanks Brooks the £75 Up and Running gift voucher for winning the corporate entry to the Oxford half marathon. Bought myself some much needed new trainers. And thanks to Brian, Marion and Alistair from HR Wallingford for racing with me and bumping up our average to win.

Who is going to win? – the science

SprintAndy only took up endurance racing 2 years ago, Tony has been racing for… well probably longer than Andy has been alive! David is 8 years younger than Tony and 6 younger than Peter. (So if Dan cycles in an easterly direction how tall will Peter be at 4pm)

Only Dan and Tony have done the full Ironman thus far, but Andy has completed the cycled length of France and David across the UK. There are a fair smattering of pre existing conditions the Health Insurance Industry would probably decline to cover but drive and commitment is palpable.

So how have they progressed over the last 4 years at the Sprint distance:
750m swim, 20km cycle and 5k run.

However this is the shorter of the distances normally undertaken. For the uninitiated there is the Olympic distance which is basically double the distances, then the Long Course of half Ironman 70.3 and the big mamma The Ironman.

Combine the fact that different courses will generate different times due to conditions and course difficulty.  So the first comparison would not reflect the stamina and endurance required for the longer distances. Here the experience of preparation, tapering, training balance of endurance and core strength will be influencing factors. SO cross comparison is not really clear cut.

Olympic

Then again we have little in the way of statistics to work on above distance this except for Tony:

Ironman 70.3

So we need a more scientific way of evaluating the likely outcome of the Team Russell podium.

Football! Well I am told it is the answer to everything… so lets see.

On the current Premier League results:

Dan would head the premiership of the four with strong performance in all three disciplines, David in Second feeling the away part of the game impacting his performance and Tony third with lack of direction during training from ever changing Managers and Peter feeling sick as a parrot.

but the season is only half played,

So more science is needed… last year.  This would have seen David top the league with Tony in his wake but keeping his lead after a strong swim leg over Dan, and Peter feeling sick as a parrot.

It could be that this science has some merit, after all if we were talking about 2010/11 Then we would have seen Tony the experienced (fanatical) competitor steeling the lead with David on his heals with barely a whisker between them and Dan chasing, and with Peter feeling sick as a parrot.

But there is respite for the most interesting season 2011/12 and here we see David, Dan and Peter whipping the experience with youthful exuberance, and Tony left for dust.

So what will it be?  Training hard work, preparation, nutrition, kit and conditions or the “science” of football?

Positive mental attitude

cancelledAfter my comments earlier about a positive day after a good training session my journey too and now back from London is a nightmare – no trains at all running on my normal route having to go further north before getting picked up from Stevenage station.

Positive mental attitude ..

what a load of b—–ks

A word from the wise

wise_old_man_by_otunga-d4lx30kSo it appears we are up and running again, this time with additional resources. The three new members, David, Peter and Andy are all partaking in the longest event in their tri careers so out of their comfort zone. The banter has commenced and the day gets ever nearer…..I am sure the journey will be interesting, painful, frustrating but most of all fun.

However, let’s not forget what this is really all about. We lost our inspiration last year but prior to that I made a promise…to Colin. For those of you that knew him and those who got to know him through the written word will appreciate what a totally amazing bloke he was, and during one of our chats at a Chelsea match he said to me, ‘don’t give up, beat this thing for me……and I promised to do what ever I could to play a little part in supporting the Headcase charity and provide funds to the clever people who might just be able to beat it. The disease might have thought we had given it a bash last year with the money raised and that we had given up 20130516_023153and let it destroy many others, but watch out it has never come across a determined single minded sod like me!!. Further fuel to this situation is that my brother-in-law’s wife in Australia has recently found out her mother has the disease with a similar prognosis to Colin.

So whilst the following 16 weeks will be a bit of fun the main focus is to ensure we add to the funds in whatever way we can, all of those of you who helped last year with events, and ingenious ways of raising money we look to you to repeat. And perhaps we can inspire a few others to get involved.

I am convinced we can help make a difference, they need our help, not only those who are seeking a cure but also those who have unfortunately been or yet to be diagnosed.

So please join us and make it a bit of a mission to beat it. Thanks

Spoke too soon

Peter: Last time I post a status on facebook- no sooner had I mentioned how positive I felt after a good gym session the bloody train service screws up somthing about overhead power cable problems so I’m stuck on a train between stations for ages then eventually the train goes back to Borehamwood and they annouce to use a bus to get in to London …wow a nightmare ,,, sod it off to the bacon role shop all that gym work wasted – trying to see the funny side of it can’t quite get that though ???
