We are almost global

This blog was first launched in January 2013 to bring to the world’s attention the need to raise funds for Headcase Cancer Trust to help find a cure for a horrid disease. The emotional journey we all followed and felt a part of Colin Smith and his family as they moved from normality to devastation in less than one year generated such passion from those who read about it we raised over £30k. Now we want another 20k.

In that time the blog was visited over 35 thousand times:

From the map you can see we pretty well had hit from every unsanctioned western world country with an internet connection.

From New Zealand to Norway and Argentina to Australia.

I think we have a few left to conquer, do you know anyone in Namibia, Chad or Ecuador?

What is very exciting is since the recent relaunch on Monday we have already had over 240 visits, led I am sure by those involved but will permeate out to those they know and encourage to follow the blog.

SO… please spread the word and encourage people to follow and comment. Then with additional pressure with a sharp implement if needs be ask them to donate.

This cause gets relatively little funding and is such a catastrophic disease we need to find a cure for. The people it hits are normal, adults, important to their families and friends and they get so little time to say good bye.

If one of the posts brings a smile to your face or cheers up your day please donate. and remember you don’t have to donate only once, pay day does come round again.. month after month. perhaps if you donated last year you can donate again now. Team Russell need support to get up at 6am every morning, arrive at the gym in the dark, drink no beer, talk about nothing else but muscle aches and chafing.

Please click the purple button and donate.

Best laid plans

bacon-377333Peter: “Today 15 Jan training came to a halt – on arriving at the gym for my 6am workout it was found that some bright spark had left the tap on the water machine running – this ran all night so with water coming through the light fittings of the floor below ( the gym is on the first floor) they had no choice but to keep the gym closed – I feel at a loss for not training this morning I actually showered at the gym and went to work well early, no one at the office when I arrived so no key meaning sitting in the café round the corner having a bacon sandwich – totally screwed up my plans inconsiderate bastard? Who knows if it will be open tomorrow – best laid plans !!!”

Editor: no chance of a quick run once round the block and a bowl of Muesli at Pret A Manger?

Introducing Team Russell

gimson-lat_1948673cSometimes a family has an interest in scrabble, maybe train spotting, possibly Mediaeval Re-enactments. I think we’d all agree it would probably be a great idea from one member… lets go camping….. Mum and Dad and kids, then kids reluctant or enthusiastic who cares… Then Kids get older and may not be quite so keen? …. The tales of endless summer holidays trekking the countryside and pitching tents in the pouring rain or preparing sandwiches for a day by the river in waders and a bucket hat or railway siding?

But perhaps less common is three brothers finding a common interest- post mid life crisis risk zone, that is, not only is it a big deal for the average city professional, but also sets revive all the delights of sibling rivalry.

Add to the mix one brother’s offspring and a mate, just to pitch the youth against the experienced, and the merry gang prepares to defying human norms.

So In order of age, showing due deference for experience… in something..

  • Tony “Ironman Senior” Russell, 56 of Harpenden,
  • Peter “middle child” Russell, 54 of Harpenden,
  • David “baby bro” Russell 48 of … yup, Harpenden,
  • Dan “Ironman Junior” Russell 25 originally of Harpenden now of Dubai!
  • and  Andy “honorary Russell” Brown  also formerly of Harpenden

Do they put something in the water?

David sets the bar

Each competitor wants to complete the race on the day. But along the way they are engaging on a journey, a personal challenge of guts and will, determination that the psychological wall can be scaled, the girth of beer can be kicked into oblivion.

So it would be only right to record the progress….

We will publish training accomplishments on a weekly basis – if only to provide metrics to support the excuses for poor times on the day….

We will also show the physical progress with photographic evidence to see the true effect this extreme training puts on the average, middle aged, city professional gent!

So we have asked each to take a before training starts photo, David obliges and tries to set the bar.

Introducing Andy “Russell” Brown
carrotName: Andrew Alistair Brown – as close a name as possible to our friends the Brownlee brothers NB. only similarity being a total disregard for pain and well being.

D.O.B: 22/12/1987 – Fresh, prime, all joints intact – well almost… I have a previous rugby career to blame for most of my current aliments.

Reason for entering: To beat the Russell’s (And raise a tonne of money for a superb cause). I’m the wildcard entry, I’m the carrot in front of the donkey (I mean Russell family), I’m the guy these Russell’s will be chasing up mount doom (NB. I’ve taken it upon myself to name the Majorca assent ‘mount doom’).

Updated Fundraising Goals

We thought 50K was a nice round figure and we wanted to keep the thread going from all the work everyone did since January last year. So a re styled just giving page might encourage everyone to dig deep over the next few week and months and remember the research to find a cure needs to be supported. We will be posting news on what our money was used fro shortly along side Possible suggestions for Peter’s lycra wardrobe options!

Please read our posts – talking to one’s self is bad enough, blogging to yourself could be the next main affliction to our modern society

New Year, a New Start, a New Challenge

Same God awful disease we want to clobber!

last year we raised 40k for Headcase and we will be able to say what it’s being used for shortly and it’s really exciting. So the new challenges for this year, firstly we have decided to take on the Brownlees, so on the 15th March in Abu Dhabi Tony and Dan will take on Alistair and Johnny in the same race. We then have 4 Russell’s and a Brown going to Mallorca for a 70.3 more info later. So we are going to set up the site again and see if we can raise a bit more money…watch this space.
