A word from Headcase

OK, so Tony Russell (he of Ironman Triathlon Sickness) has asked me to pen a short piece for his blog to bring you all up to speed with what’s happening at Headcase and where exactly your donations will be going…..

You may already know that Headcase is currently funding two 3 Year Research Programmes at the University of Portsmouth both of which have produced some exciting results so far. However the really exciting news is that in the Spring we are also going to be starting a 2 Year Patient Trial in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth, Southampton General Hospital and the University of Bergen, Norway. The trial will be assessing patients with recurrent GBM using a drug called Clomipramine which has shown very good responses in earlier trials and ad hoc patient survival cases (10 years in the longest case). Clomipramine is an old anti-depressant drug which has been around since the 1960’s. All of the money raised by Tony and the guys will be going directly into the Trial.

To put that into perspective £200 will pay for a day of the Trial (it will cost around £40,000 annually) but perhaps most importantly nearly all of our donations go directly to our research, or in this case Trial. Headcase is an extremely efficient Charity where 98.2% of donations go directly to research, and if you add Gift Aid to the equation then for every £1 we receive we actually spend £1.05 on research! We’re able to do this because our model is that we don’t employ anyone and no-one takes a single penny from Headcase as salary and we guarantee that they never will! Headcase is a modern Charity using modern marketing and fundraising strategies which don’t rely on costly manpower like the traditional charities.

Please support Tony and the guys as best you can and remember…… The Future Gets WrittenToday.

All of the information about the upcoming Trial and the Research Results to date are on the website http://www.headcase.org.uk/heads-up.

Cheers,

Col

Peter: Two days off from the gym and things all go wrong!! Forgot to take my water bottle, worse still I did not put any shorts on so had to train in leggings – then forgot my belt for my jeans after showering and no towel! Last time I have anytime off !! – still felt good back on the bike funny your body is pretty good at telling you what to do ‘like rest’ bashed out very close to a PB on the bike so happy with that – onwards.

That thing they call the ‘wall’ … well I think I have hit it and bounced off my body is in bits bad back, bad knee, bad ankle legs ache ! HELP – I keep telling myself its all in my mind but then when I try to run or cycle my body tells me it is real. Still have to keep at it as the lycra kit is still too tight – thanks to everyone who has added to the grand total we must keep spreading the word – Keep going !

Editor: We want photographic evidence of this Lycra fitting issue!

Traithlon, TRIUK

TriUK2A morning spent at Tri UK in Yeovil gives a real understanding of the infectious passion for the sport. rows upon rows of jaw dropping works of two wheel art and walls festooned with every gadget and item of apparel you could ever wish for, from bags to socks, GPS to allen keys, creams and nutrition bars, gloves and cleats. A cornucopia of cycling heaven.

The service is at a level many of retail outlet could only aspire to, and the facilities include a cafe, for whilst your bike is being serviced, an Endless pool to take a dip in and try out your new wetsuit, and an Asics running gait analysis.

Its easy to spend a lot but their advice is amazing at whatever level you are, first timer to pro, and price points for all. But with a great second hand department it is possible to get some pretty amazing quality items on a budget. They even have 10 different level packages, comprising bike, lid, Tri suit, Wet Suite, pedals, Goggles and cycle shoes

We got a current season Giant composite bike for less than half price, a slightly damaged wetsuit and some fit like a glove cycling shoes. Only knock on effect was the need to go out and test drive the purchases, so this afternoon’s gentle 7k cycle was a 25k trek (plus three grazed knees across two children)  If you fancy a day out, you can spend much of it in this place.

visit them https://www.facebook.com/TriUK

They say Triathlon is the new mid-life crisis, its no longer fast cars and women or botox and Prada but now Carbon and Neoprene.

I might choose it over shoe shopping!

Peter: Things are starting to fall into place now .. I think? – my bike ride this morning felt really strong after a tough ride last night I suppose I must now try and push to the next level where ever that is? Still keep at it, as the days tick by – as I sit on this train …well who knows what tomorrow bring?
