Today the boys head off for a practice competition together for the first time this year and since Tony’s injury (ies). Blenheim is a Russell regular diary entry for the family with Tony’s younger brothers David and Peter both competing as well.

Tony, Peter and David are all racing at 13:20 on Sunday 9th June, in the Sprint. Bib Numbers 6528, 6526, 6527 respectively. Dan gets to try out the course first at 14:00 on Saturday 8th June, in the Sprint.

So what are the distances:

LLR_RouteMap_2013

750 m Swim in the Blenheim Palace Lake.

19.8 km Cycle on pretty smooth tarmac around the scenic grounds

5.4 km Run to cool down?

A nice weekend jaunt, well it is when compared to the distances that will be undertaken by Tony and Dan in 14 days time. The Blenheim distanced pale at the 11-20% range of the Ironman Challenge especially the Cycle!:

money
The 23rd May 2013 will be seared into the minds of many. in fact for those that have any memory at all it will we hope have been logged as a great evening of fun, surprise and fund raising.

We already knew we had raised  £2100 in donations to secure a place which has been collected on the Just giving site.

but on the night we also raised – £810 from the Prize draw, plus dances with cast and peanut retrieval escapades (don’t ask!)  and £1000 after expenses for the event sponsorship then the auction items totaled £6950

meaning the evening raised  £10,860

Less what has already been listed leaves £7,950 still to log bringing the total as of today to  £23,536

This is mind blowing really but also tantalizing close to the big “30” it would be absolutely fab to get there by 23rd June, that is just 29 days away!

So if you feel you can throw in another £10, £20 or £50 out of this month’s pay, or have any pending fundraising ideas you can throw into action.

A big thank you to:

  • Paradise Park, Cohort for a feed the cats experience www.pwpark.com
  • Insider Magazine for two subscriptions http://www.insuranceinsider.com/
  • Cohort Film Services for a behind the scenes trip http://cohortfs.co.uk/
  • A years subscription to www.luxury-briefing.com
  • Denning Solicitors www.denningsolicitors.com
  • Royal Wimbledon Golf Club courtesy of Chris Gems
  • Spa Fabulous Organics  www.spafabulousorganics.co.uk

Without whom we would not have had such an amazing result.

Since the launch of the http://www.headcase-ironman.me blog there have been over 25,000 visits from people all across the world. Countries as unexpected as Barbados, Argentina, Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic!  It is actually a little difficult to assess what proportion of the world’s countries that equates to as the definition of a country is not as clear as one might think! Either way impressive. Over 20k of these are from the UK, (which means it is a decidedly better show for the UK than Bonny Tyler in Eurovisions) but the leader board includes look like this:

Lloyd’s the Musical prepares for opening Night

London walks coffee houses2Thursday 5pm the curtain rises on the premier of Lloyd’s the Musical. With a star studded cast, lead by the infamous Trio of John Preston, Julian Kirkman-Page and the legendary Roger Foord the collection of paradies of well known hits and classics from Mary Poppins and South Pacific to The Beatles and Edith Piaf will be unleashed within a Mama Mia style operetta. All with a decidedly Insurance and IT theme – a novel but often quite comedic marriage providing over 30 years of excellent material to work with.

Accompanied by the very talented Libby on the ivories and narrated by the austere tones of David Edwards the show will take to the stage (or small space at Steam Win Bar) with the support of Paula, Jane and Kirstin (muggins) to bring a little colour to proceedings.

The opening scene sees three elderly gentlemen sitting within the comfort of the coffee house owned by Edward Lloyd in the mid 1600’s debating the relative merit of sharing a bit of Mary, Sarah Jane and Gwendoline!

It is surely set to be an evening the market will never forget, due to be filmed and no doubt will go viral within minutes! But if you have not been lucky enough to get a ticket for this now Sold Out event we would ask that our efforts are not in vain and that if you are able to remind us we are in your thoughts and donate an extra few quid, it will provide that dutch courage before some of us bare more than perhaps we ought to, in front of a debatably appreciative audience!

Meanwhile, a neurotoxin from the venom of the giant deathstalker scorpion has been found to attach to the surface of brain cancer cells. The overwhelming reason tumors come back is that surgeons can’t reliably distinguish good cells from bad at the growths’ edges. Magnetic resonance imaging—the best available diagnostic tool—doesn’t detect masses smaller than about a billion cells. This means surgeons have to find the boundaries between tumors and healthy tissue “purely by visual and textural cues,” says James Olson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. “It’s a very imperfect science. Glioma cells weave into normal tissue, and pieces sometimes get left behind.”
Doctors who treat glioma, the most common form of brain cancer, created a “molecular flashlight” by marking chlorotoxin with a near-infrared dye. On the very first trial, Olson says, the “tumor paint,” as he calls the scorpion-derived marker, “lit up the cancer beautifully. We were literally jumping up and down because we knew what incredible potential this had.” The paint reveals masses with as few as 200 tumor cells. “You can truly see the tumor almost cell by cell,” Olson says. “This will let surgeons get more cancer out, maybe even 100 percent.” Human trials on the dyed toxin will start later this year, and if tests go well, the paint could be used for prostate, colorectal, lung, breast, pancreatic, and skin cancers, as well as glioma, potentially saving or prolonging millions of lives every year.

This was always going to be a rocky ride!

Cancer, Colin Smith, GBM, ironman, triathlon

I have been asked to write on Colin’s behalf this week as he is unable to post a blog update himself. Alas this is because he is currently in hospital, his condition has taken a sudden turn for the worse with a diagnosis of multiple bilateral pulmonary embolisms ! (blood clots on both lungs) he is having treatment for this and at the moment this condition is serious.

Colin feels that posting his developments like this will help people realise how this terrible disease can so rapidly escalate! He has made sure there has been a wonderful element of humour in this blog to encourage people to relate to the person as well as the disease. We have all read some moving and wonderful postings from Colin’s friends and family and we are delighted to have been privileged in helping providing the forum for everyone to express their support and feelings towards Colin and his family.

However we also need to impart just how catastrophic this cancer is and how fast matters go from concerning to serious. For those who take a serious view on wanting to understand what happens, from a more medical perspective you may want to read: http://www.hindawi.com/crim/medicine/2010/862028/ it is from the USA, but it is one of many case studies available for review.

Gender of people who have glioblastoma multiforme and experienced Pulmonary embolism:
Female – 29.7%
Male      -70.2%

Age of people who have glioblastoma multiforme and experienced Pulmonary embolism:
40-49 – 15.14%
50-59 – 24.29%
60+    -58.04%

Our prayers and best wishes are with you Colin.

Cancer, GBM, ironman, Nice 2013, triathlon

Asmara July 2008 060

Now we have a few followers and comments I am hoping people will spread the word, encourage more to follow, tweet the word, like, poke, Facebook, chat, refer and generally ensure the exposure of this missions goes viral! I have been delighted to be able to set this blog up, it certainly seems the easier option rather than doing the Ironman!!! but if anyone has comments on things they’d like to see, read or link to, please do let me know. We have already had over 1200 views in the first 3 days.

Obviously the intention is to surpass last year’s fundraising target of £30k and aim to reach £50k… but also to raise the profile for research into this tumour through the Headcase Charity Trust. If anyone has contacts, links to the Media, friends or family that can assist in raising the profile and thus the funds please get in contact. I had never heard of Headcase Cancer Trust before hearing Colin’s Story, someone I have yet to meet, but frankly, what I know so far, is an inspiration.

I have previously raised money for widows in Eritrea Air ambulance and last year Breast Cancer Campaign. But I immediately felt that the efforts the Ironman required and the difficulties this Charity faces and Colin’s situation it made perfect sense to help in any possible way.
