Scores on the doors

Ok so just how have they been doing over the last 3 months.

(I absolve myself from any backlash to any perceived criticism that not enough has been done from a position of comfort on my sofa not sitting sweating on a bike or suffering injuries!!!)

Andy

Andy , possibly the longest legs and definitely a natural engine being relatively newer to the Triathlon bug, but Blenheim showed Dan having the stamina to take him on the last leg. Not an avid swimmer in the weekly routine clocking up the second least swim total thus far at 17.4km, the least amount on the bike at 868 but by far the longest on his feet at 372Km running.

Dan

Dan , suffering with the Flu so unfair to count the last 10 days, pipping Andy on the swim total at 22km and again on the bike at 895Km. But both of the younger members of the team deploying a more High Intensity Training style to training rather than racking up the miles.

David

David a solid cyclist putting in a fairly regular distance per week in the saddle and totalling 1649Km. a couple of impressive weeks of swimming pushed David in to second place over all with a total of £1.1Km in his speedos and keeping elder brother in third position with an impressive 221.016 (still converts from old money) on his feet.

Peter

Peter is our water shy contender, finding his water wings in week 12, thus to date only 5.25Km in the pool, but a healthy steady cycling score of 1837Km, an average of 153Km per week and whilst the least of the Brothers on his feet a stead score every week will be paying dividends. With an injury on the bike in week 12, ensuring it is stretched and protected is the priority.

Tony

Ok last but not least, in fact in the saddle and in speedos, by far the highest score, 53.25Km in the pool and 2436Km on the bike, but those knees being protected from too much pounding the treadmill with an average of 16.5Km per week just under 200km thus far.

71% towards our target.

71 percent imageWe are getting there, slowly edging towards our target and every penny really is helping. For those that were so generous last year, please do consider helping again this year. Those who gave from February’s pay packet – could you do the same again this month?

If you have the opportunity to run an event, Andy raised over £200 with Gift aid from a bake off at work. Its hard work fund raising and asking you all for a few or a lot of pennies. But we really do need your help.

The race is on!

Very interesting week at the start. It was all doom and gloom, very fed up with a leg injury that I thought would screw up my chances of making the start line in 5/6 weeks time – so some serious talking to myself and some expert work and more importantly some great advise by my new physio mate, means I am back bashing out the Km on the bike and treadmill and lengths in the pool – the big difference is that I am stretching out after each session far better than before using the foam roller to work each musle group. This means they (musles) are recovering better – more sessions and hopefully more good advise from Dave the NZ physio will get me to that start line feeling positive and in good shape – the race is on.

Back on the bike

Peter: Ok so back in the gym this morning .. was it a mistake, too soon after my injury ? I pushed through a 25 minute ride on the bike at a very, very low resistance managed 14K with mild discomfort actually in truth a bit more than mild! But as instructed by my physio loads and loads of stretching and foam roller work which was good – I am not feeling too bad if I’m honest, swimming tonight – Back on it!

Injury verdict

Peter: Well the good news is I’m told there is no tear in the hamstring like I was told by the physio I saw on Sunday !! however the big New Zealand rugby player of a physio I saw yesterday told me that I have a slight strain (caused probably by using a new bike with the saddle too high and cleats for the first time) also he says I don’t stretch out enough after exercise so the musle does not have time to recover or repair before exercise again. So to fix this – 4 intensive sessions with this physio he said ‘I will get you sorted one way or the other’ and a load of self massaging exercises with a foam roll – all in all quite positive. I certainly feel better than I did after Sunday.

Now the focus must be on getting this right whilst getting back to the training Happy days?

Unbelievable

Tony: Well what started as a ride in the country turned out to be a real slog….Peter and I left home at 6.45 on Sunday and headed for Dorking. All good, dry and the sun was almost threatening to make an early appearance.

Arrived in good time and registered and lined up to start, which is when things started to go wrong. Peter had borrowed David’s bike and had not used cleats before, so having clicked in he was unable to click out…first challenge, clearly if you don’t click out you fall off !!. Anyhow a quick lesson at the start seemed to work and off we went…only to be stopped at the crossing for the A24….and Peter couldn’t click out, thank goodness for a friendly lamppost……any way drama over and off we went again..all going well then some hills, then some more hills, box hill among them, bloody hell !!!

Then it got comparatively flat. First food station, went past and doing ok, approaching 70 k and a saddle malfunction noticed by the fact that my knees were hitting my chin, so off the bike adjusted, thought it was a little tough ! Stopped at the second station to get some more water and then on the last leg…..well, around a corner and across a road and their it was, the steepest hill I have ever seen….nothing in the legs and baled about half way up. However walking was even harder…not great, actually walked past someone who was still trying to cycle up it, now that was strange !!!

Anyhow complete the 140k in just over 6 hours great work out, but Peter had injured his knee..so a bit of a worrying, but no doubt in my mind he did it trying to get out of the cleats and I’m sure he will be fine, at the Physio todayfingers crossed….next stop New Forest two weeks….

The first great hurdle

Peter: Who would have believed it I actually found the swimming pool and doggy paddled 70 lengths which is nearly the distance required – cannot say I enjoyed it as there seemed to be 20 other people in my lane some faster but the majority slower agh! – still its a start and more to come.
